A Guide to Drain Cleaning

Professional drain cleaning methods are meant to be used as a preventative measure against clogs and also function as a solution for clogs. Chemical store-bought drain cleaners should be a thing of the past because they can do more harm than good and can actually make it easier for clogs to form. This blog will discuss professional drain cleaning, including signs indicating it’s needed and how it’s done.

How Homeowners Know They Need Drain Cleaning

Several signs can indicate a clog in the sewer line or one that is becoming clogged. Slow-draining drains, water backing up from drains, bad smells, and gurgling sounds coming from drains, especially at unexpected times, are common signs that a growing clog has narrowed the drain pipes or they are completely clogged.

Once a homeowner notices these signs that their sewer line is clogged, they should call a plumber for drain cleaning. If clogs are neglected, they can cause more issues than just these signs. Clogs can also damage pipes and lead to more costly repairs, so they should be dealt with immediately.

Drain Cleaning Method #1: Plumber's Snake

snaking

Drain snaking has been around for quite some time, and it is still a very useful method for getting rid of clogs.  It involves using a spiral-shaped tool on the end of a long, flexible cable to snake through the sewer pipes and find the clog. The head spins into the clog and either breaks it up or removes it by pulling it back out. Some of the pros of this method include:

  • A drain auger (or drain snake) can be used in almost any drain and pipe.
  • There are various sizes and lengths for various clogs and pipes.
  • This method is unlikely to cause damage to pipes when done by a plumber.
  • This method has long been in use by plumbing professionals.

Drain Cleaning Method #2: Hydro Jetting

hydro jetting

While not new in concept, the hydro jetting method has been used more frequently in the plumbing industry. This method uses a high-pressure stream of water to break up the clog without damaging pipes. Some of the benefits are:

  • Functionality: This method is not only great at clearing clogs but can also be used to prevent them.
  • No Collateral Damage: This method ensures that pipes will not be subject to corrosive chemicals or scratches that can cause damage. It only uses water. However, hydro jetting may not be suitable for old or worn-out pipes, as they may not be able to handle the high pressure that the water comes out at.
  • Automatic Backup Block: The hydro jetting method also includes a  balloon that fills the pipe, eliminating a backup issue and ensuring the water goes in the right direction.
