Signs Your Home Needs a Sump Pump
Many homes contain sump pumps to prevent flooding, but sometimes they aren’t present or need to be installed after the fact. While homes in low-lying or flood-prone areas are most at risk, even those that receive heavy rains can also run into flood damage.
This guide provides some signs that a sump pump is needed, as well as the different types and selections of pumps available.
Signs You May Need a Sump Pump

There are several key indicators that signal a home needs a sump pump. One of the most obvious is if there is a sump with no pump. Sumps are low parts in a basement or cellar that are designed to allow for the collection of water as it leaks in. When installed with a pump, the water can be safely pumped out of the home preventing further damage. It’s also worth knowing that sump pumps wear out and require replacement. If a sump pump is over six years of age it might be time to test or replace it.
Another sign is if there has been a previous flood in the basement or crawlspace of a home. This is especially important in finished basements where carpet, furniture, and other valuable items can get damaged and destroyed. If the history of the home is unknown, homeowners can look for signs of flooding - water stains, mold growth, or mineral build-up can all be signs of previous flooding in a basement or crawl space.
Different Kinds of Sump Pumps
There are two main types of sump pumps: pedestal and submerged. Often, the space the sump sits in will dictate the type of sump pump that can be installed.

- Pedestal pumps sit above the sump, with the motor above the water. Because the pump doesn’t need to be waterproof, these types of pumps are significantly cheaper than submersibles. They are also much easier to service or repair if something goes wrong.
- Submersible pumps are typically more expensive than pedestal pumps but they have several advantages. For one, these sump pumps are significantly quieter than pedestal pumps and visually much less intrusive. This is typically a better choice for finished basements, as they are hidden. They are also a much better choice for homes with small children as they prevent accidental drownings.
Choosing a Sump Pump

Outside of space and finish requirements, there are several important considerations when choosing a sump pump. Horsepower is one of the most important. If the pump is underpowered it won’t be able to keep up with the flooding- which is exactly what it's there for. This can be heavily influenced by the pitch and length of the drain pipe. Picking a pump that’s rated for enough water flow will prevent this problem.
There are also battery-powered back up sump pumps. These are helpful as a secondary system that kicks in if the power fails. As sump pumps are most frequently used during severe storms these can be quite useful. There are even units that have a built-in battery back up for added peace of mind during storms.
